Squirming Depths Dungeon
Systema Delenda EstSquirming Depths Dungeon is a twelve-level dungeon that serves as the first decisive test of Raine and Leese’s reconstructed combat identities. Entering as newly embodied Urivans and operating with Cato’s augmentations, they clear the dungeon in six hours, defeat its silver-rank Guardian, complete the associated quest, and advance to Silver Rank. The dungeon therefore functions not merely as a hazardous location but as a controlled demonstration of how far their bodies, equipment, and accumulated essence have carried them beyond their former limits.
Setting and Dungeon Structure
Squirming Depths Dungeon is presented through its final approach rather than through a complete survey of every level. After the last ant-monster falls, Leese identifies the route to the Guardian’s chamber, and Raine joins her at the entrance. The dungeon’s scale is nevertheless clear: Harik Lim identifies it as a twelve-level dungeon and estimates that a normal expedition would require at least three days. Its completion is consequently measured not only by the strength needed to survive it but by the extraordinary speed with which Raine and Leese traverse it.
The dungeon also contains the standard infrastructure associated with System dungeons. A return pylon stands at the far end of the Guardian’s room, allowing the pair to leave after the fight. They deliberately do not search for the dungeon’s core. That omission distinguishes their immediate objective from Cato’s broader campaign against System anchors: they have come to clear the dungeon and advance, not yet to destroy the structures that support its existence.
The Guardian Battle
The dungeon’s final obstacle is an enormous silver-rank ant Guardian surrounded by slowly shifting rock spikes. The spikes visibly indicate at least one of its Skills, and the Guardian would once have been intimidating to Raine. By this point, however, the monster is reduced in her estimation to meat. Raine and Leese have spent enough time learning to operate their new bodies that they are confident they can destroy anything below Gold Rank.
Their tactics reject the cautious method the encounter appears to invite. Rather than baiting the Guardian’s attacks and gradually wearing it down while avoiding the earthen spikes, they vault clear of the attacks and strike at speed, hitting the monster like insectile projectiles. Even Cato’s impossibly sharp weapons cannot simply sever such a large creature’s head, so they attack its vital areas instead, opening massive rents through its body. After several minutes of chopping through the screeching, writhing behemoth, they leave it motionless beneath them.
The fight also displays the practical value of their Urivan anatomy. Their bodies are larger and bulkier than ordinary forms, with chitin plates over tough, leathery hide and broad armored feet. Most distinctive are the gripping claws extending from their backs and resting on their shoulders. The claws are strong but slow and clumsy, with three digits and limited articulation; their principal usefulness is holding objects. That limitation becomes an advantage when the objects are shields. With the claws and Cato’s augmentations working together, Raine can wield two massive, spiked shields while still using a polearm, turning an awkward anatomical feature into a specialized combat system.
Rewards and Advancement
Defeating the Guardian completes the Squirming Depths Dungeon. The System announces that the dungeon has been cleared and awards Essence, with additional Essence granted because of the pair’s low Rank. The associated Silver Rank Quest is also completed, and the advancement to Silver Rank follows immediately.
The emotional force of the promotion is deliberately restrained. Raine experiences the rush of ranking up as muted because she and Leese have installed damping at Cato’s suggestion. Cato had been candid about his reservations concerning the intensity of System feedback, and the sisters accepted the modification even though Raine had not previously considered it necessary. The decision gains practical justification when they realize how easily a person can rise from nothing to Peak Silver through banked Essence and bonuses. What once took them a long time now appears almost absurdly inefficient, making the dungeon’s advancement reward feel less like a miracle than the correction of an old distortion.
Both sisters reach Peak Silver through the Essence and bonuses accumulated by clearing the entire dungeon at Copper Rank. This creates a contrast between their visible status and their actual trajectory: they leave the dungeon with the rank appropriate to their public presentation while possessing the accumulated advantages of a much more abnormal process. The dungeon thus becomes a bridge between hidden power and socially legible rank.
The Return and Its Consequences
After one final check, Raine and Leese use the return pylon and ride their sled back toward the entrance. The sled bumps up the stairs, and within minutes they emerge from Squirming Depths Dungeon. The entrance lies in the side of a solitary hill in rocky terrain without trees. The exposed landscape gives them a broad vantage point, while the hill’s erosion profile and stone composition prompt Cato to offer technical observations rather than treating the site as merely a dungeon entrance.
Their emergence immediately changes the situation from a private trial into a social encounter. A standard four-person delving party is approaching, and wilderness meetings carry an inherent wariness because no higher-rank presence is nearby to enforce civility and no witnesses are present to intervene if violence begins. The possibility of attacking a group of the same rank is not routine, but a rich or vulnerable target can tempt people seeking power. The dungeon’s completion therefore does not end the danger; it exposes the sisters to the political and predatory environment surrounding dungeon exploration.
Harik Lim reacts with disbelief when Raine states that the two of them cleared the twelve-level dungeon in six hours. Raine presents the claim without boasting. Within the System, bluntly stating their capabilities is more credible than falsely understating them, while claiming to have entered as fresh Coppers would sound boastful and unbelievable. The real explanation—that they are effectively immortal agents of an outsider god—would be even less plausible to outsiders, so the dungeon’s time becomes a carefully limited public fact: astonishing, but still interpretable as the achievement of exceptional martial specialists.
The other delvers’ reaction also reveals the material cost of a normal expedition. Harik Lim estimates that the dungeon should have taken at least three days, meaning that a delay of even one extra day in the wilderness could strain a party’s supplies depending on its finances. Raine understands the burden because she has previously occupied that position. Her awareness places the sisters’ overwhelming success against the ordinary economics of delving: what is a six-hour demonstration for them may represent several days of exposure, expense, and uncertainty for everyone else.
Narrative Significance
Squirming Depths Dungeon converts bodily transformation into publicly testable evidence. Raine and Leese do not merely possess unusual Urivan forms; they learn to exploit their armor, shoulder claws, shields, polearms, and Cato’s augmentations under pressure. The Guardian battle proves that their new bodies are operational rather than symbolic, while the six-hour clearance proves that their capabilities exceed the expectations attached to Copper and Silver Rank.
At the same time, the dungeon exposes the difference between System recognition and lived power. The System translates the sisters’ achievement into Essence, quest completion, and a rank increase, but the muted feedback and their rapid rise make that reward feel mechanically inadequate. Their progress is both validated by the System and quietly detached from the ordinary rhythm that the System expects. The dungeon’s final image is therefore double-edged: a completed challenge behind them, a return pylon used instead of an anchor destroyed, and a wary party ahead of them in the wilderness. Advancement has been achieved, but concealment, negotiation, and danger remain.
